James is against favoritism of any sort, condemning it in the lives of the wealthy and in the courts. But he is equally opposed to double-mindedness, which typically involves failure to trust God and instead takes matters into one’s own hands. James’s hopes are firmly resting in the coming of the Righteous Judge. The Epistle of James is written against the backdrop of extremely sensitive social issues that plague the modern church in every case. That’s one of the great appeals of this small letter.
